Fundraising Budget

Updated: Mar 23, 2022

  • Some organizations are okay with 30-50% cost of fundraising

  • However, Islamic organizations that use zakat money should be very careful with administrative costs. The prevailing acceptable range in Islamic organizations is about 10-15%

  • Despite the above, you do not want to be cheap. Good organized event costs more money but it is usually able to impress donors and convince them of the success of the organization and the amount of respect that the organization has for its donors

  • Your goal is to make a lot more in income/donations than expenses

Potential expenses

  • Staffing costs: beside volunteers, you may need to pay for servers, security, and janitorial workers...

  • Venue: location, capacity, permit, security, attendee management and cleanup

  • Catering

  • Entertainment cost

  • Speaker fees: lighting, sound system, decor, MC, motivational speaker

  • Insurance

  • Marketing: postcards, posters, social media…

  • Event management software

  • Crowdfunding software

  • Miscellaneous (prizes, awards, talent treatment, name tags, signs, t-shirts)

Potential income/donations

  • Pledges before the event

  • Donation during the event

  • Crowdfunding running along the event

  • Individual ticket sales

  • Table or group sales (usually for parties of eight or ten)

  • Benefactor, patron, and sponsor donations (for which donors receive special recognition in return for contributing higher amounts than a basic table or seat costs)

  • Sponsorships of event participants (for instance, pledging to contribute a particular amount per mile run by a friend)

  • Business partnership and sponsorship

  • Food and/or beverage sales

  • Sales of goods and/or services

  • Advertising sales (in printed programs, on banners, and so on)

  • Purchasing a chance (raffle tickets, door prizes, and so on)
